I did a teleseminar which was hosted by Christina Rowe author of "Seven Secrets to a Successful Divorce" and she interviewed me, Tracy Repchuk, bestselling author of "31 Days to Millionaire Marketing Miracles" on the topic "Success Above it All".
For those of you who don't know much about my background, I will be sharing something with you that only a handful of people knew before today. When I met Christine Rowe, and she had the courage to talk about her past, she made me realize that I don't have to hide what happened, and in fact, I can use it to help anyone that has been through a similar experience.
When I was young I went through a horrible divorce. For those of you who don't know my story, I started my first company while I was still in college at the age of 19, in 1985. Together with my college boyfriend, we planned our life together. I had made the big leagues by time I was 22 years old, driving my BMW, buying properties, extravagant vacations, Mercedes, the works.
And then, we got engaged, but it's not what you're thinking, because 2 weeks before the wedding, he called it off. He was with someone else, and she had gotten pregnant, and he was going to marry her. I had to work side-by-side through agony and heart ache, and watched him with her, while I still loved him. But the pain did not stop there. I did something foolish, and that was start to see someone who was clearly not right for me. And then yes, in June of 1989, we got married, while I was still reeling from this original devastation.
That is where my problems began, because within the very short 9 months we were married, after it was clear he had a temper, it took me almost 4 years to get a divorce, cost me thousands and thousands, as he fought for every ounce that he could get out of me, emptied our personal bank account, emptied the house of the furniture while I was at work (he had just graduated as an Engineer so hadn't established his own career yet), and then he came after my company.
But, that wasn't the hard part. It all came tumbling down on me with the full fury of a tsunami, when during all of this, running a company, watching my ex-fiance with his new wife and daughter, the wife wanted me out of the company. So, the locks to my business were changed, my business credit cards were cut off, and he tried to keep me away from my company. I had 2 men vying for my company at the same time.
So what was I to do? Well after months of trying to determine what had he done to the company that he needed to hide from me, I discovered that it was $100,000 in debt, and still owed over $200,000 in deliverable custom programming projects, most of which all the money had been collected, and no work had occurred.
Now what - right? Well, here's what I did. I got a loan for $80,000 and bought him out. I brought in a partner, which has now been my husband for 15 years, and pulled that company out of bankruptcy, restored our credit, delivered all of the projects with no funding to pay for them, and started again. While he moved directly across the street, doing the same thing, and stole all of my staff.
Then what is the moral of my story? It could be many things, but today, it is about realizing there are steps to get out from under the piles of tragedy, and actions you can take to move yourself to the next level of success.
It doesn't matter where you are in your life right now, because from this moment on, you are going to be better off.
