Social Groups such as Myspace, facebook, Digg, del.icio.us, furl.net, and hundreds of others are communities where the content is user powered. Everything is submitted and voted on by the community.

These are becoming a fast and popular way to get your message out, share information, and be connected with very large communities of users with like-minded interests. This is where your audience is, meeting quite often daily.

Like search engines, Social Media Sites are controlled by custom algorithms. Hailed as “user driven social content,” its front page is often populated with the items which have been voted most newsworthy by the community.

Social groups can provide you a wealth of traffic, interest, and potential customers, particularly if the social group is within your area of expertise or niche. For the most part, social groups are a relatively untouched area for businesses, partly because they have no real idea of the potential that sits within the groups.

Social groups are niches right at your fingertips of anywhere from twenty to more than a thousand people with a tremendous potential for the health of your business. There are thousands of social groups available across the world that meet, talk, and socialize with each other for a variety of reasons. Depending on your niche, choosing a social group could be an exciting and very profitable experience.

For example, if you were an expert in the niche of direct marketing, you will definitely have no problems in finding a social group that caters to only direct marketers. By becoming a member of the group you will have opened a new avenue of promotion for your business, products, and services.

Establishing Yourself as a Niche Expert

Because social groups are generally tight nit and very close, they would be more apt to come to you for products and services as a member than they would a non-member. For the most part, social group members believe in supporting and promoting their own. By becoming a member and talking with the social group about various different aspects, you have the ability to establish yourself as an expert in your niche by offering advice, guidance, and information. “The World Goes Crazy for a Sharp Dressed Man”

If there was ever an unconventional look, it was personified in the group ZZ Top, who sang about the effects of a Sharp Dressed Man. From the time man has dawned a suit in the corporate world, it became a stable part of the environment enabling them to reflect status, power and structure in their appearance.

Large companies such as IBM had the blue suit at every cubicle, turning their staff into a herd, yet showing the world a united front and culture which has since started a downward spiral of a bygone era.

It started with casual Friday’s, where personnel were allowed to express their identity in an outfit, that even though had acceptable guidelines, still provided some assemblance of freedom and spirit of play.

I started my first company at the age of 19 in 1985, for a number of reasons, and attire was one of them. In a suit, dress, nylons, I felt a restriction of creativity that bordered on self-imprisonment, and although I have never been formally employed or accepted the business attire, I did adhere to it when I had to leave my office to venture into other worlds, otherwise known as the clients.

In my office programmers roamed the halls barefoot, coke bottles stacked were stacked like shrines of creativity and the walls were covered with marker boards of expression. But this was not the norm, and when Apple, Google, Dreamworks and other larger companies started to loosen the tie knots, entrepreneurs burst open the gates with a new standard in corporate attire.

No longer did the clothes reflect the person, but it was the spoken word, confidence, knowledge and a smoking hot portfolio that paved the path to a new generation of entrepreneurs. Working from the home, videoconferencing, email, technologies made an enormous difference in the way companies met, communicated and ultimately signed deals. This meant the entrepreneur was relatively free to wear what they wanted.

Internet marketers in particular parade stories of doing business in their underwear, and although that isn’t a particular image I wish to envision, entrepreneurs of today are taking casual to a new extreme.

Polished shoes are being replaced by flip flops and sandals. Does this mean that corporate America is headed for a down turn? If there is one, it would be the open-toed entrepreneurs that would be the saving salvation in an attempt to turn an economy around otherwise steeped in protocol and tradition versus ingenuity and speed. A good idea is only as good as it can get to market, and particle flow seems to happen fast on a pool side lap top, a hand held Blackberry or an internet café, all without any consideration as to what someone is wearing.

Ponytails and tattoos are no longer crucified in the office halls, in fact, it seems to add intrigue to the creative elements that may underlie such an appearance. In an environment that historically shunned and were slow to adopt this element, this aspect alone may have been the cause for such strongholds as Windows. The fun loving Apple urbanites, or the long-haired executives at Linux, pushed the expressive envelope and were bypassed for most offices and government, and almost resulted in an extinction of superior software environments.

Are we still judging a book (ie. Entrepreneur) by their cover?

Slowly the tides are turning as the results are starting to speak louder than words, and more corporations are opening their doors to the jet set enthusiasm of casually dressed entrepreneurs, who probably spend more time on your account, than on the selection of the clothes they wore that morning.

Remember those sayings “The clothes make a man.” I would bet that a suit manufacturer or clothing company inbred that little quote into our nomenclature.

With an upsurge of entrepreneurs entering into the marketplace, and with over 47% of those being women, the time has come for the unique expression of identity of the new social culture, to be “Wear what you want.” It is this freedom which allows an entrepreneur to put the focus on what’s needed and wanted, not what the shell looks like. Even the average age is lowering, with 13 year olds making millions on the internet, 27 year olds on their way to billions that it’s hard to care what goes on the outside, when the inside has so much to offer.

Youth, instincts, freedom, self confidence, and honesty are all traits that started a new revolution in clothing for the entrepreneur, and this has cascaded into the offices and board rooms of many corporations who turned their focus from clothing policy to work ethics, where it belongs.

So could this evolution of the new generation of entrepreneurs with their flip flopping, pony-tail flapping, tattoo-wearing attire really succeed?

Could this trend towards self expression collapse the ideals that a quality suit prepares for ‘success?’

Law firms, accounting houses, client meeting corporations, still cling to their dress code. In some circumstances it comes down to acceptable attire for a courtroom or business culture, but there will be a day when even those hallowed halls will be affected.

Remember when church was always for the Sunday best? But even that domain has been revitalized as youth parade in to get the message, not worry about dress codes.
This new shaping of society will continue to shatter previously built barriers and crudely created misconceptions, allowing the individual to create the mold, not fit it. I for one love the paradigm shift, and when a 12 year-old in jeans shows up on my webcam to complete an order I’ve just placed for high-end services, I look forward to the day when this would cause even the staunchest member of the old boys club – not to flinch.

Los Angeles Earthquake and Your First Time

Los Angeles gets hit by a 5.8 earthquake

My first earthquake experience, as a brand new home owner on the side of the Verdugo mountains in Burbank, CA. In some form it could have been our worst nightmare. The warnings that we shouldn't buy on a hillside because of earthquakes, the warnings to buy earthquake insurance - which we didn't, and the warnings to keep renting until we were sure.

Warnings are everywhere, but it is the risk takers that move past them to the fruits.

Entrepreneurs, internet marketing, and the success stories all come from a brand of risk takers.

It was exciting, as the house swayed and rocked like a nursery room cradle or 56 foot schooner at the tail end of a storm. Our steel beam foundation held firm, not even a book fell from the shelves as we stood in full motion, motionless.

It's a bit like internet marketing and your first time.

Sometimes like a typical internet marketing product. The tumultuous life cycle of a product launch is an overwhelming task for many, an every day encounter for some, and a wall so high for others, that it is never scaled or attempted.

Everything is a risk - it comes down to what are you willing to risk for your dreams?

After going through Jeff Walker's complete and thorough training, and then having an intensive 3 day workshop with Harris Fellman at his house with some of the best launchers around, I feel you get a pretty solid understanding.

Now comes the risk - doing a launch.

Randy Pausch of "The Last Lecture fame" dies

I don't often write about non internet related things, however this in essence is a big part of the internet's power, and covers the bigger picture topic of humanity and brotherhood and community.

Randy Pausch was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer in September 2006. His popular "Last Lecture" at Carnegie Mellon garnered international attention and was viewed by millions on YouTube. This is where I first encountered him. And I cried. Not for the impending sadness of his imminent departure, but for the fortitude of his spirit. The power of his message that had to be said. And on a small scale, this is very much internet marketing.

Here is the YouTube video - it is time well spent.

Now it may have been the Oprah show where you first saw him, or perhaps you were one of the fortunate to witness history in the making by watching him live at Carnegie Mellon, but no matter where or when you encounter it, the important thing to note is how he lived in the end.

Well it shouldn't take death or the threat of a health issue, for us all to take it up a notch.

Randy showed us how to celebrate life, living and in the end, he didn't apologize for leaving out the morose.

As we all attempt to leave a legacy, not only did his message, and his book impact all of us, but he made sure his family was well cared for in his absence with a reported $6 million book deal, for a book that took 53 days to write.

Good advice (because if you're not having fun, isn't a part of you dying in some way?)

In his words of wisdom he said, "We don't beat the reaper by living longer, we beat the reaper by living well and living fully."

I did a survey on close to 10,000 subscribers with a huge response rate, and I was actually surprised at the results. It was question #5 though that I was shocked with.

Here are those results. Post comments, agree, disagree, and share your thoughts too.

1. What is your number one issue to getting your goals?

I thought the #1 answer would be time. It turned out to be knowledge. So I had better start getting my knowledge out there faster.

2. How would you rate your Internet Marketing knowledge?

Intermediate - I have sites, but not making money 41.7%

It was a tie - between newbies/beginners and those that are intermediate, but have never made any money. That is certainly what I have encountered in the industry, but I was surprised at how close the stats were split between the two groups.

Really, email is still the preferred method for my group, with a side of teleseminar and a dash of mentoring or ecourses. This was different than my expectations, as my answer would be mentoring.

No elimination today - but the results are in... and in they will be combined with the next results.

Team Pepperjam - grew. Black shirts spread around the room. What's up - we find out that John got Pepperjam to donate money, and he also wore their shirts.

TIP OF THE DAY - If you don't ask, you don't get. That is something I need to listen to, because I rarely ask, and John just showed how easy it works.

John Chow thanked the Ken's network which donated to their Pay per click campaign.

$87.93 XY7.com - Good God people, this is affiliate marketing. Am I missing something? Is there some difficult thing we don't see as viewers?

$1680.50 - Ken's team rules again. That deserves a clap.

Ken was amused that John Chow asked Ken's sponser for funds, and got it. So Ken called Chris too of Pepperjam to see what's up dude? Even with the huge donations though, it's all money out, and not in. Can't wait to see what they will finally do with this money.

How to Optimize a PPC campaign:

Adwords -
Step 1 - Keyword bid, What are people searching for?
Step 2 - Ad, headline, 2 body copy, display URL, and actual URL. All of this impacts whether your ad is clicked.
Step 3 - The offer (ie. landing page, sales page, or affiliate offer)
Step 4 - Data - need to know how it works together statistically. Thousands of impressions means good keywords. No clicks, ad isn't working. No impressions = poor search terms.

What to optimize at this point? Work from headline on down.

Multi-variate testing involves testing only one factor at a time.
ie. headline - wait for results

Optimization is ongoing, and can be a slow process of trial and error.

If no conversions, then the offer page needs to be improved. If it is an affiliate that you can't change, then you can either contact the affiliate and they may be open to it. I always put a landing page in front of an offer, so that I at least have them in the system, then I can work them without being dependant on the affiliate page right off the bat.

Wes looked like a deer in the headlights after Jonathan shared his stuff. His PPC stuff rocked.

Ken - incentivized offers
- Give money or a free gift for opting in.
- You have to make sure what you give has true value
- When you buy traffic, capture the person, then make the offer
- Then take them through a funnel system and build a relationship with them

Provide a real solution, to a real problem, or you won't have any IMPACT (buy Ken's book by the way of that title.) It is fantastic.

- Shape 4 - triangle - what you are attracting into your life
- Shape 5 - circle - your community and starting as you mean to continue

If you dream big, work hard, and believe, you can do it.

John Chow - build relationships, and always let someone know how you can benefit THEM, that is how doors will open. If you want to be a somebody, act like somebody.

Team XY7.com - $360.60 - Ouch. Only Jason clapped. Apparently Team Toolbarn was the only ones to bring in the cash. Seems to be a lack of cohesion, and individual efforts are producing the only amounts on the board.

Jonathan handed over the ring to Collin De Ruyck. Haven't seen much from him in the videos, but perhaps we'll see more of his efforts.

It's clear that in order to ensure safety in affiliate marketing, and on the Top Affiliate Challenge, you need to be on top.

#2 - Pretty good - Team Pepperjam - Close but no cigar - $916.66

Last - and abysmally so - $127.75 - Come on people. What is going on? No traffic? No Sales? You need to really get together as a team - choose a leader, something has to change - you are in a condition of DANGER. John Chow - take over.

There was a challenge today, and someone will be safe.
To get it - they had to promote the hotel they were staying at - by linking to www.newvictoriansuites.com by commenting on blogs, hotel sites, etc. Great idea to see how they can get out there with something they are promoting. With 4 team members, there should be a lot of posts.

They worked their tails off, and got no results, optimized, and were completely deflated.

John Chow had to make the choice - he went with Ian, who was VERY happy.

Seems we have some answers to the poor results.

Team Pepperjam - nobody was eliminated. They are all safe.

Team Toolbarn.com - Jeremy's wife went into labour - he had to leave, the guru is gone, they have now combined with XY7.com. They are now one team.

Oh the drama.

Twisting in affiliate marketing isn't drama. Affiliate marketing itself is drama, you can show us the detailed steps. Ian said - whole competition prediction - one of the Collin's. John Chow tip he pulled out - relationships are important, John worked hard, matched the budget, and showed us all that it is key and easy to use other people's money.

and Last place was abysmal $-7.00 - Team Toolbarn - you should all go home now.
Seriously, do a blog post, make some money, make it happen, and work together.

But tonight was double elimination - OUCH! Team XY7 edges out of last place, and still they take a hit.

Big Jason, Ronda, you are players, you have connections, use them.

No immunity for you today - Collin LeHay has it right now, given to him from Jason. Could this prove to be a death sentence - we hope not. As a result, they went to the teams to sell it. A PPC trick in exchange for the ring - passed.

Lesson - I liked how Thor used a contestant that got eliminated to teach the lesson. Nice touch.

Blogging for Profit. I made my first money from a blog post - ALWAYS blog, and never underestimate the power of this medium. You don't need a marketing background - just speak from your voice, to your demographic. Communication is key.

Top Affiliate Challenge First to Get Eliminated is...

Today we found out about the Wright Jewellers Immunity Ring - very cute way to integrate a sponsor and promotion. Similar to the HackerSafe T-Shirt from Next Internet Millionaire, I like the home town support in this though.

The results were about $300 in affiliate earnings. Seems deathfully small, but I guess without seeing what had to be done, it's hard to understand why the amounts were so small - but whatever the reasons - it was consistent across the board given the close proximity of all the teams.

The winning team was Ken McArthur's.
Second was Team Toolbarn - Jeremey - and the losing team for the day was XY7.com - John Chow.

Behind the scene connection issues seemed to be the cause.

The person voted off was Jonathon Ryan.... Ohhh, the first one - painful.

Today's name of the game was free leads and blackmail. :(

Blackhat tactics... I guess if you have muscle, you flex it.

Won't help us, or contestants in the long run, but I know we will see Ken roll out some real affiliate tactics that will help all of us.

Then today starts a Blog Auction affiliate challenge.

The contestants were informed that they will be sending bidders to a blog auction that is housed in this post.

It was a logistics feat that he has accomplished thus far.
